Royal Manang brings the authentic taste of Manang to the heart of Kathmandu, offering food that stays true to its roots rather than following commercial trends. Located on the ground floor of Chhaya Center, the outlet is founded by TD Gurung, a young entrepreneur from Manang who grew up with this cuisine. The focus here is on preserving the original taste, texture, and honesty of Manang comfort food, using real ingredients, traditional cooking methods, and a clean, MSG-free approach. Instead of loud flavours or heavy masala, Royal Manang delivers simple, bold dishes where the natural flavours speak for themselves, creating a food experience that feels homemade, balanced, and deeply comforting.
Ambience
Royal Manang keeps the setup clean, compact, and atmospheric. The tent-style seating creates a comfortable, homely feel, a deliberate nod to the warmth of Manang hospitality. The aesthetic and peaceful corner-space inside Chhaya Center make it ideal for quick snacks, slow conversations, or a relaxed food stop after shopping. The lighting and decoration felt so warm and aesthetic, the place is perfect for your Instagram reel or post.
The space works well for:
- Quick comfort meals
- Friends and group visits
- Solo food breaks
- Trying authentic regional flavours
- Light evening snacks
The atmosphere stays calm even during busy hours, which makes it a reliable stop inside an otherwise loud building.
Food Quality
The food at Royal Manang felt fresh, honest, and noticeably different from the usual Kathmandu style momo. Everything leaned toward a homemade style, thicker dough, clean seasoning, and fillings built on natural flavours instead of MSG or heavy masala. Their focus on Manang-style cooking shows in the texture and simplicity of every dish.
- Aata Momo
I’m usually not a fan of aata momo. Most places make it too dry or too bland. But here, it worked. The whole-wheat dough had a warm, earthy feel without being tough, and the potato filling made it soft and surprisingly enjoyable. It was my first time trying it, and while I may not eat it regularly, it was definitely good for a one-time try. The flavours were mild but clean, and because they don’t use MSG or artificial spices, it tasted more like something homemade rather than a commercial version. It’s still a lighter momo overall, but much better than what I expected. - Cheese Kothey Momo
The veg kothey momo was the highlight. The crisp bottom, soft top, and creamy potato + cheese filling made it stand out immediately. The cheese melts into the potato and gives the momo a rich but not heavy texture. No overpowering masala, no greasy aftertaste, just a balanced, comforting flavour. If I had to pick one item to return for, this would be it. - Fries & Drinks
The fries were crisp and had a clean finish, not oily or over-seasoned. The drinks paired well with everything, especially alongside the kothey momo.
Overall, the food tasted natural and thoughtfully prepared. A little mild in places, but in a good way, the ingredients come through clearly without the usual Kathmandu-style spice overload.
Service & Experience
The service was warm and welcoming, with friendly and attentive staff. While the food took a little time to arrive, the staff remained polite and helpful throughout. The wait felt reasonable, and the quality of the food made it worth it.
