We visited the outlet to try some of their well-known dishes, and the experience felt calm, structured, and very much in line with the MTR name.

Food Quality

MTR Kathmandu is a pure vegetarian restaurant, and that focus is clearly reflected in both the menu and preparation. The food feels traditional, well balanced, and thoughtfully made rather than heavily modified for modern tastes.

We tried some of their popular South Indian dishes and genuinely enjoyed the experience.

The curd rice was simple and comforting. The rice was soft, the curd tasted fresh, and the seasoning was mild yet balanced. It felt light on the stomach and worked perfectly as a cooling, soothing dish.

The Mangalore buns were one of the highlights. Soft, slightly sweet, and fried just right, they had a great texture without feeling greasy. Paired with chutney, they worked well as both a snack and a light meal.

The ragi dosa stood out for its crisp texture and earthy flavour. It felt wholesome and filling without being heavy. The dosa was well cooked, not dry, and paired nicely with the accompanying chutneys. A great option for those looking for something nutritious without sacrificing taste.

Across all the dishes, the food felt clean, properly portioned, and consistent. Nothing tasted rushed or overly commercial. The flavours stayed true to traditional South Indian cooking, which is exactly what many people look for when visiting MTR.

Service & Experience

Service at MTR Kathmandu is not as good as i expected, the staff were polite enough but the orders and instruction were not taken carefully. I hope they will work on that in the near future.

Food arrives within a reasonable time and is served neatly. The service style matches the calm and structured atmosphere of the restaurant, making the overall experience smooth and comfortable.

The Story Behind MTR

MTR’s journey began long before it became a household name. In 1920, three brothers, Parameshwara Maiya, Ganappayya Maiya, and Yagnanarayana Maiya, left their hometown near Udupi in Karnataka and moved to Bengaluru in search of better opportunities. Cooking was their strength, and they began by working as cooks in respected households.

In 1924, Parameshwara Maiya opened a small restaurant on Lalbagh Fort Road serving coffee and idlis, called Brahmin Coffee Club. What started as a modest setup slowly laid the foundation for something much bigger.

After his passing, the responsibility was carried forward by Ganappayya Maiya and later Yagnanarayana Maiya, fondly known as Yagnappa. Over the next few decades, Yagnappa ran the restaurant with discipline, integrity, and a clear vision.

In the early 1950s, he travelled to Europe and observed how restaurants maintained high standards of hygiene and organisation. Inspired, he returned to Bengaluru and introduced major changes, sterilised utensils, strict cleanliness practices, health education for customers, and even an open kitchen.

The restaurant was renamed Mavalli Tiffin Rooms (MTR) after its locality. In 1960, it moved to its present location on Lalbagh Road and soon became a landmark. After Yagnanarayana Maiya’s passing in 1968, the legacy continued through the next generations.

That long-standing commitment to integrity, hygiene, and quality is what defines MTR, and the same philosophy is now reflected at MTR Kathmandu.

MTR Kathmandu delivers exactly what it promises: authentic, pure vegetarian South Indian food in a clean and comfortable setting. If you value traditional flavours, balanced meals, and a calm dining experience, MTR Kathmandu is worth your time. It’s not about flashy presentation or experimentation, it’s about doing the basics right, and that’s where MTR truly shines.

Overall, MTR Kathmandu is ideal for vegetarians and anyone who wants authentic South Indian food in a clean, relaxed environment, especially for lunch or a calm dinner.

  1. Although the dosa and combo were good enough, I felt a bit disappointed on idli. They could do better.
