Taking a trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city sometimes is what we all crave, and Kulekhani turned out to be one of those perfect places for us to escape to for a couple of days.
It’s conveniently located just a couple of hours’ drive from Kathmandu and is great for a relaxing weekend away with beautiful lake views, stunning natural surroundings, great food and a wide variety of activities to do while you’re there.
While we were in Kulekhani, we stayed at the Kulekhani Village Resort; we explored the area, we had the opportunity to go boating and ziplining, we enjoyed spending quality time in the great outdoors. So we have lots to share about our Kulekhani travel experiences, including where we stayed, the cost of our accommodation and food options, the vibe of the area, and how to get to Kulekhani.
How to Reach Kulekhani from Kathmandu
Kulekhani is approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) from Kathmandu.
However, The drive takes about 2.5-3.5 hours to complete depending on traffic, road conditions, and when you start your trip.
We left Shankhamul in a Hiace van with a group of 10 people and made 2-3 stops for snacks, drinks and bathrooms on our way to Kulekhani. The drive was scenic and mesmerizing, you start in the city, but as you’re leaving the city limits, you see nothing but green trees, forests, and small village communities as you travel along the road toward the Pharping and Dakshinkali areas. These areas are main routes to Kulekhani.
There were some challenges with the drive from Kulekhani to our village resort because of landslides that had occurred earlier, but we reached it very easily.
You can reach Kulekhani by following these ways:
1. By private vehicle or motorcycle
2. On a public bus from Kathmandu
3. In a reserved jeep or taxi
If you are traveling with a group, a great way to travel is in a reserved Hiace, with prices ranging from approximately Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 14,000 depending on vehicle type, season, and point of origin.
Having a great group of people made this trip even better as we filled the drive to the Kulekhani Village Resort singing song and enjoying throughout the journey.

First Impressions of Kulekhani
Our first feeling after reaching Kulekhani was relief. The air felt cooler, the place was quieter, and the lake view instantly gave a calm feeling. After spending so much time around the traffic and noise of Kathmandu, standing near the lake felt like a proper pause.
Kulekhani is not the kind of place that overwhelms you with too many things to do. That is actually what makes it nice. The hills, water, fresh air, and slow atmosphere are enough to make you feel relaxed.
It still has a simple and peaceful charm. You can sit near the lake, drink tea, take photos, talk with your friends, or simply look at the view without feeling rushed. For a short weekend escape, that was exactly what we needed.
Our Stay at Kulekhani Village Resort
For accommodation, we stayed at Kulekhani Village Resort. One of the best things about the resort is definitely its location. The resort offers a beautiful view of Indrasarovar Lake, and the surrounding hills make the whole place feel peaceful.
The property has open spaces, greenery, seating areas, a swimming pool area, and spots where you can just sit and enjoy the scenery. It does not feel overly fancy or artificial. Instead, it has a cozy and relaxed environment that fits well with the natural setting of Kulekhani.
The staff were also friendly and welcoming during our stay. That made the experience more comfortable, especially since we were traveling in a group.
For me, the best part was not just the room or facilities but the overall vibe of the place. You wake up, step outside, see the lake and hills, feel the cool air, and naturally slow down a little.

Food Experience at the Resort
After a long ride, food always tastes better, and that was true during our stay as well. The food at the resort was simple, warm, and satisfying.
They offer local-style food along with regular meal options, so it works for different preferences. The dining experience felt even better because of the peaceful surroundings. Sitting with your group, having food, and looking at the lake and hills made the meal feel more enjoyable.
One of the small moments I personally liked was having tea in the cool weather. It was nothing fancy, but in a place like Kulekhani, even a simple cup of tea feels special.
Activities to Do in Kulekhani
Kulekhani is a good place for both relaxation and light adventure. You do not need to follow a strict plan, but there are a few activities that can make the trip more enjoyable.
Boating in Indrasarovar Lake
Boating is one of the main attractions in Kulekhani. The lake is peaceful, and the surrounding hills make the ride feel even better.
The boat ride gives you a different view of the area. When you are on the water, the place feels quieter and more open. It is a nice activity, especially if you are traveling with friends or family. The rider sometimes speeds up the boat, and when the water touches your hand, it feels more enjoyable and relaxing.
Zipline Experience
If you want something more adventurous, you can also try ziplining in Kulekhani. The experience is exciting because you get to see the landscape from above, with the lake and hills around you.
For people who enjoy adventure activities, ziplining adds a fun part to the trip. It balances the calm side of Kulekhani with a little bit of thrill.
Relaxing Around the Lake
Honestly, one of the best things to do in Kulekhani is nothing complicated. Just sit, walk around, take photos, enjoy the weather, and spend time with your group. From the Kulekhani village resort, we could climb down the hill and reach the side of the lake, where we sat for hours and enjoyed the view.
One of the most exciting parts of the trip was the bonfire in the evening. All of us sat around the bonfire and sang and danced, which was the highlight of the trip.
Not every trip needs to be full of activities. Sometimes the best part is simply being away from the usual routine. Kulekhani gives you that space.
Location & Accessibility
Kulekhani is approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) from Kathmandu.
However, The drive takes about 2.5-3.5 hours to complete depending on traffic, road conditions, and when you start your trip.
Our Kulekhani trip was simple, peaceful, and refreshing. It was not about luxury or a packed travel plan. It was more about the lake, the hills, the cool weather, the road trip, the resort stay, and the time we spent together as a group.
For anyone looking for a short weekend destination near Kathmandu, Kulekhani is a good option. It works well for couples, families, friends, and even office or group outings.
If you want a peaceful stay with lake views and easy access to activities like boating and ziplining, Kulekhani Village Resort can be a nice place to consider.
For us, the trip was a good reminder that you do not always need to travel very far to feel refreshed. Sometimes, a few hours away from Kathmandu is enough.
